To execute a down shift, wait till the revs have dropped off a bit, i.e. Most people don't seem to reccommend going down the box without using the clutch but I actually find it is less agressive than going up the box cluchless, if done properly, and allows you take full advantage of the dog box by exclusivly left foot braking. Easy from third to fourth but you need to be a tad more careful going across the gate. To do this most people lift off (this doesn't mean lift all the way as depending on how quickly you get it out of gear and into the next one you risk switching to the overrun side of the dogs) literally all you need is to gently pre-load the lever as stated above and as fast as you can lift to a *neutral* throttle and back to full throttle you'll have completed the shift. In order to change gear under accelleration you need to remove torque. If you're not putting a gob load of torque through the transmission at the time it *MIGHT* be possible to yank it out of gear but it's certainly not recommended. Just look at the shape of them! They are trapazoidal in section to hold it in gear under power and on ovverrun. You HAVE to do something to unload the dogs. Abso-bloody-lutely, don't let him drive your dog-box.
